What are Vedic Planets?

Vedic astrology plays an important role in Hinduism. Like other ancient civilizations, Hindu culture has its own version of astronomy which is originated from Vedas. The 9 planets in Sanskrit are called Navagraha have collective influence in one’s life. According to the Hindu astronomy, the Navagraha positions at the time of a person’s birth help determine his potential in his life. The position influences the person’s happiness, success and all-round prosperity. It also causes positive and negative, good and bad effects. In case, the jatak has Navagraha Dosha, it can be removed with specific Navgrah mantra jap, Navgrah puja, Navagraha Homam or Yantra.

Note: Out of those 9 grahas in astrology, seven are named after the planets in the Solar System and the rest two are actually demons who played trick to find place in the Grahas, they are Rahu & Ketu.

Surya (Sun)

During the birth of life in the earth, God Brahma cited a word “OM” and this word was the first step of creation of the Sun. There are many tales that signify how the Sun is supreme from all the Navagrahas. According to Rigveda, the Sun has multiple names. It is also known as ‘Savita’, it means who has formed the world. As per astrology, Sun is the master of Leo (Sing Rashi) and to please the God, one should wear MANIKYA. He should donate jaggery, copper, gold, GEHU swatsa cow and red clothes to a pandit or brahman. There is a Vedic mantra to recite to please the God as per his devotion. There are different positions of the Sun that determines YOG of a person for example, if a jatak has KARK LAGAN, in the 2 nd BHAW of the Sun there is effect of SASTHES SHANI OR RAHU, the jatak will become a doctor or has doctor YOG. Similarly, if the GURU and Sun in the SASTH BHAW, the jatak can suffer from any type of stomach problem. There are remedies to get over the SUN DOSHA.


Chandra (Moon)

According to Bhagvad Gita, Chandra is the child of Rishi Atri and Anusuya. The tale of Mata Anusuya is popular among Hindus. She was a PATIVARTA lady (devoted to her husband) and the three Gods (Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh) came to her to examine her PATITW SHAKTI. They wanted Anushiya to feed them without clothes. Mata Anushiya accepted their challenge and turned the three Gods into kids to feed them without clothes. At that time, she wished to become a mother. The three Gods blessed her with 3 sons and among them, there was Chandrama. According to Jyotish Shastra, Silver is the main component of Chandra. He is primarily known for emotion (BHAVUKTA). He is devoted to beauty. From SHUKL PACH AKADASH to KRISHN PACH PACHAMI, Chandra is strong and pours Jatak with blessings. Whereas from PANCHAMI to AMAVASYA, Chandra is weak, pours with bad consequences.


Mangala (Mars)

As per Hindu legends, Mangal is the son of Earth and Sun is its father and Chandra is its mother. There are several names of the Graha and among them it is also known as KUNJ AND BHAUM. He is known as KUNJ because he is son of Earth. He separated from the Earth, therefore, called as BHAUM. Jatak who prays the God with his different names gets rid of debt. Jatak should wear copper or gold. The Munga gemstone should be worn. Today, people are talking lots about Mangal Dosha. There is hardly any astrologer who can explain about the Dosha. This is the reason many AMANGALIK KUNDALI are categorized into MANGLIK. If a Jatak has a Mangal Dosh it can be removed with MANGLIK MILAN.


Budha (Mercury)

Budha was born in GHANISHT NAKSHATRA YUKT DWADASHI. He is PITVARN and wears yellow clothes. He belongs to VAISHYAJATI. The incarnation of Budha is a long tale. Budha is considered a knowledgeable God who played an important role in
BHOTIK GYAN which later famous as ATHAVRAVEDA. It holds knowledge of Economics, Math, Science, Skills and Business. Therefore, Budha is related Business. Hence it is considered a soft Graha (planet). According to a tale in Mahabharata, King Manu married his daughter Eala with Budha after getting influenced with his sharp brain. Jatak who is born on Wednesday is wise, clever, like to live life in luxury and is a soft mind people. The Jatak has also pleasing personality. To please the Budha God, jatak can take fast in Budhashtami. If a jatak has a Budha Dosha, Jyotish Shastra has remedies to get over it.


Brihaspathi (Jupiter)

Brihaspathi is the son of Angiras. He is pioneer of all Gods. He has been placed as a master or preacher. It is a fifth orbit planet. Due to its large size, it has been named as Brihaspathi. In the Vedic Shastra, Brihaspathi name comes in several Vedic Mantras. In the Navagraha mantra, his name is also associated with many other grahas. Brihaspathi is considered SWAMI of Dhanu and Min Rashi. His MAHADASHA is for 16 years. For the Navgraha Shanti puja, the Jatak should fast on every AMAVSYA. He should wear yellow PUKHRAJ. Donate yellow clothes, haldi, yellow grains, books, gold etc. to a brahman.


Shukra (Venus)

In the solar system, the Navagraha is seen before the Sun rise in the eastward as a “bright morning star”. As per Hindu mythology, there are three sources of the incarnation of Mata Lakshami- SAMUNDRA MANTHAN, birth from JWALA LIGHT and as a Bhrigu daughter. The tale in which Mata Lakshami birth is related to Bhrigu associated Mata with Bhrigu-Shukra. The planet is related to fame and immortal knowledge. Where the Brihaspati is considered a demon who collects gold. In many Vedic mantras, Shukra name is recited. According to ancient tales, Shukra was the Guru of demons. As per Jyotisha, Venus has two Zodiacs- Libra and Taurus. Hence, the jatak of VRISHLAGN is of strong determination, self-will and capable of leadership. Jatak whose Shukra is weak should follow different procedures to please the graha. Under the Navagraha Pooja procedures, there is a specific puja for the shanti of Venus.


Shani (Saturn)

Saturn is the 6 th graha from the Sun and is second in size after Brihaspati (Jupiter). As per Hindu Mythology, Shani is the son of Surya. There are lots of misconceptions about the God Shani. Many people pray him out of fear. They feel that Shani can be reason of sorrow and death. But the truth is that Shani is the only planet that can give you relief from the death and birth, called Moksha. He does justice with every person. He is the SWAMI of two Zodiac signs- Makar and Kumbh. Jatak can appease Shani Dev by praying him on Saturday.



Rahu is paired with Ketu and is considered inauspicious like Ketu. When Rahu is malefic in one’s chart he may suffer from a lot of mental stress and misunderstandings. Health problems like allergies and mental illusions etc. Rahu Dosha can be eradicated with the help of Navgraha Yantra, mantra and some Vidhanam.



As per the tale of Mahabharata, during the SAMUNDRA MATHAN, to get the “AMRIT RAS” or Immortality, a demon tried to disguise Gods and stood in the queue to get AMRIT. But Chandra and Surya recognize him and informed Vishnu about this. Quickly, Vishnu cut his head. The head turned into Rahu and the rest body was called Ketu. The last Navagraha is counted under demon grahas. A jatak who is born during AADRA, ASHLESHA or Ketu is against him, hislife may be in danger.


Elements of Navagraha

The nine planets in astrology have different elements or TATVA.

Navagraha Temples

You may have heard Navagraha names but you know anything about the Graha temples. These temples are located in Tamil Nandu near Kumbakonam built during the reign of Chola dynasty. As per Hindu legends, Sage Kalava was suffering from leprosy. He organized a Navagraha puja at his home and followed all Navagraha puja Vidhanam with a great devotion. The 9 planets were pleased with his devotion and recovered him. Looking at this, Lord Brahma was unhappy because he felt the nine planets had no authority to bless people. Lord Brahma cursed them to suffer from ailments and sent them to earth in Vellurukku Vanam. These 9 planets were unhappy and prayed Lord Shiva who relieved them from their agony. Shiva said, the place now belongs to all of you and they will be worshiped here. So, the temples of these 9 planets are situated here. Each temple is situated in different nearby villages. Before visiting these temples, confirm the Navagraha temple timings, location and puja vidhi.
